Congress Thinks New FCC Maps Will Fix the Digital Divide. But We Need Much More.
I wrote a piece for Slate on the FCC’s new map process. I argue the new maps have been over-hyped, and political pressure to deliver the new maps work against the ability of the FCC to do a thorough, accurate job with a complicated statutory requirement. After all, it was Congress that dictated exactly how the new maps should be built. New maps will fix one part of the digital divide measurement challenge (partially served Census blocks), with others (like pricing transparency!) still needing serious attention.
